Historically, paper was a luxury item, with its use reserved for bureaucratic and religious elites. As it was expensive and not widely available, the College of Jesus in Coimbra (the first Jesuit college in the world, founded in 1542) commissioned a series of tiles featuring theoretical representations of Euclid and Archimedes from the book “Elements”, in the edition by André Tacquet. These tiles were displayed in the Physics and Mathematics classrooms, making them more accessible to students.
Handmade tile. Variations in size, shape, and colour are to be expected.
