Kitchen Panel with Fishes & Full Border (9x6)

from €950.00

Managing a global naval empire, from a logistical standpoint, is no easy task, and since the early days of maritime exploration, it became necessary to establish specific divisions for communication. To this end, the position of Correio-Mor das Cartas do Mar (Chief Postmaster of Sea Mail) was created, with Luís Gomes da Mata being the first to hold this office.

This role brought him considerable wealth, enabling him to transform a former monastery in Odivelas into a grand residence, the Palácio do Correio-Mor, at the beginning of the 17th century.

Boasting lavish decoration in tiles and frescoes throughout the palace, even the kitchens were not exempt from such luxury, having been extensively adorned with traditional Portuguese individual figure tiles and still-life panels featuring elements of fishing, hunting, and smoked meats. The fashion quickly caught on among the nobility and bourgeoisie, who were eager to showcase their opulence with the newfound riches arriving from overseas.

Handmade tiles. Variations in size, shape, and colour are to be expected.
